- The Yorkshire Regiment, First World War 2nd Lieutenant Brodrick's Medals |
Richard Phillips (<pavster1980@yahoo.co.uk>) has obtained photos of Lieutenant Brodrick's medals and Death Plaque and has kindly forwarded them to be shown on this website.
Lieutenant Brodrick was awarded the The British War Medal
(right medal) and the The Victory Medal (left medal).
The British War Medal was a campaign medal of the British Empire, for service
in World War I. The medal was approved in 1919, for issue to officers and
men of British and Imperial forces who had rendered service between 5 August
1914 and 11 November 1918. The medal was later extended to cover the period
1919-20.
The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914-15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was never awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
The medals were posted to Lieutenant Brodrick's widow by the
War Office on 7 August 1922, accompanied by a very ornately printed covering
letter. (see below)
Of particular interest here is that when the same medals were posted to
Other Ranks relatives, they were simply accompanied by a typed note on War
Office paper.
Lieutenant Brodrick's widow was also sent a Memorial Plaque (also known as the Dead Man's Penny, Death Plaque, or Widow's Penny). Made of bronze, with the name of the person who died inscribed on the plaque. This was issued to the next of kin of anyone in the forces who was killed, or died from any cause (wounds, accident, or illness) at home or aboroad during the War and up to 30 April 1920.
Accompanying the Memorial Plaque was an Illuminated Commemorative Scroll. This was Issued to the next of kin of anyone in the forces who was killed, or died from any cause (wounds, accident, or illness) at home or abroad during the War and up to 1920. Unfortunately, the Commemorative Scroll seems to have got Lieutenant Brodrick's Battalion incorrectly shown.
