The vicinity of Longueval was the scene of heavy fighting in the first two months of the First Battle of the Somme, before it was cleared in mid-September 1916. It passed back into German hands for four months in 1918. Only 100 of the First World War burials in this cemetery were made during the battles; the remainder were re-burials after the Armistice. They comprise 3338 British, 162 Canadians, 300 Australians, 35 New Zealand, 33 South African, 2 Indian, 2 German, and 2 French. Of the 3,873 First World War burials, 3,114 of them are unidentified.

There are also 165 graves from the Second World War, which were gathered in from sites where satisfactory maintenance was not possible. They comprise 146 soldiers and 16 airmen from the United kingdom and 3 airmen from Canada.

Amongst the graves are 4 soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment (First World War) and 1 Green Howard (Second World War).

We are very grateful to Christopher Weekes<weebex12@hotmail.com> and Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) for photos of the cemetery and headstones.
