The War Memorial for Londonderry, N Ireland, is located in the centre of Diamond Square. The memorial consists of a column surmounted by a figure of Winged Victory, and the column is flanked by statues of a soldier and a sailor. Attached to the column are plates bearing the names of 756 men who lost their lives in the First World War.
The names of these 756 men have been researched by the Diamond War Memorial Project, who have discovered another 400 or so names from Londonderry that appear to have been overlooked. They also discovered that of the names on the memorial, approximately equal numbers came from Unionist and Nationalist backgrounds. Brief biographies of the 756 names on the memorial have been researched by the Diamond War Memorial Project.
