St. Leonard's Church in Ludlow has six metal plaques, fitted to either side of the door in the entrance porch, commemorating those who died in the First World War. 135 names are commemorated on these plaques, including one soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Beneath one of the three plaques is a set of plaques commemorating those who lost their lives in the Second World War. Beside this set of plaques is a Battlefield Cross, originally on the grave of Leading Seaman H T Hill.
The Yorkshire Regiment soldier commemorated was Private Arthur Jukes. Although Arthur Jukes was born in Shrewsbury and resided in Ludlow, Shropshire, he served with the 5th Battalion from the outbreak of war almost to the end. He took part in the Battle of St. Julien (April 1915), and it was only towards the end of the war that he was wounded and captured, - dying of his wounds in a Prisoner of War camp.
Private Arthur Thomas Jukes. 240909. 5th Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 19 October 1918.
Enlisted Driffield, Resided Ludlow.
Buried NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY.
