The War Memorial in the church of St. James the Great, Melsonby

The War Memorial for Melsonby is a polished block of stone set in the wall of the church of St. James the Great. The Memorial is inscribed;-
IN MEMORY OF THE MELSONBY LADS WHOSE DEATH SEALED THEIR SERVICE
IN THE GREAT WAR
THIS STONE WAS QUARRIED AND PUT HERE BY THEIR MATES WHOSE SERVICE KEPT THEM
AT HOME.
"THANKS BE TO GOD WHO GAVE US THE VICTORY
THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST."

In the churchyard there is a broken family headstone which commemorates a soldier of the Yorkshire Regiment, George Herbert Gibson, who is commemorated on the nearby War Memorial in Barton (though not on the Melsonby Church War Memorial).

2975. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Ellen Jackson, of
Melsonby, Darlington. Killed 4 May 1915. Aged
18.
Enlisted Darlington, Resided Greta Bridge.
Buried BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY.
Private George Herbert Gibson. 5376. 4th Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Wetherall Gibson and the late Sarah
Gibson. Killed 26 September 1916. Aged 22.
Born Melsonby (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Barton (Yorks).
Buried ABBEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
