The War Memorial, Morpeth (Northumberland)

The Morpeth War Memorial is a cenotaph located at Castle Bank next to the Mafeking Roundabout in Morpeth.
The dedication on the memorial reads;-
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN ABIDING MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF MORPETH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE WARS/ 1914-1918/ 1939-1945/ THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM."

Four bronze plaques commemorate the names of 233 men who lost their lives in the First World War. The plaques are arranged on the four sides of the cenotaph.
Similarly, plaques commemorate 77 names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War.

2 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Private Ernest Arnott. 45340. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 5/41719 80th T R Battn. Son of Jane Arnott, of 9, Edward St., Morpeth, and the late R. J. H. Arnott. Died 21 December 1918. Aged 22.
Born Pegswood (Northumberland), Enlisted Morpeth.
Buried COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY.

Private Robert Robson Wastle. 204484. 10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Robert Robson Wastle and Jane Storey Wastle, of Morpeth. Killed 5 October 1917. Aged 32.
Born Morpeth, Enlisted Morpeth.
Buried HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY.
