The War Memorial for North and South Cowton is loacted on the Village Green in North Cowton. This memorial is incorrectly shown in GENUKI as being for South Cowton and located AT South Cowton. Curiously, the GENUKI photo shows the memorial to be standing on its own without a protective fence round it.

The memorial is dedicated
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING WHO GALLANTLY DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918".

Nine names are commemorated for those who died in the First World War, and one for the Second World War. Of the First World War names, four are for soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment. Their details are given below.


Private George Albert Brown. 201938. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William Thomas and Mary Brown of 5, Brandon Village, Durham. Killed 14 May 1917. Aged 21.
Born Witton Gilbert (Durham), Enlisted Croft-on-Tees, Resided Brandon (Durham).
Buried ST. NICOLAS BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Frederick Davison, 2763. 2/5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Sarah Davison, of North Cowton. Died at home 30 March 1915. Aged 18.
Enlisted Middleton Tyas, Resided North Cowton (Darlington).
Buried SOUTH COWTON (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD.

Private William Davison. 16790. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Died at Sea 27 December 1915.
Born North Cowton (Darlington), Enlisted Darlington, Resided North Cowton
Commemorated Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Private Ernest Robert Dixon, 204000. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. R. Dixon, of "Sunny Side," Tower Rd., Darlington. Killed 5 October 1917.
Born South Cowton (Yorks), Enlisted Croft-on-Tees, Resided South Cowton (Northallerton).
