The War Memorial at Northallerton is a cross mounted on an octagonal base. 5 of the faces of the base record the names of those who fell in the First World War, and the other three faces are for those who fell in the Second World War.

The Memorial is inscribed;-

"IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF NORTHALLERTON MEN WHO GAVE UP THEIR LIVES THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM. 1914 - 1919."

Captain Gilbert Davidson Pitt Eykyn. Royal Scots Regt. Attached (Adjutant) 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Rev. Pitt Eykyn; husband of Constance Eykyn. Served in the South African War. Killed 25 April 1915. Aged 33.

(A biography of Captain Eykyn by Robert Coulson is provided on this website. There is a war memorial chapel at Clayesmore School where he was educated. The Chapel was built by staff, pupils and local craftspeople and was completed and dedicated in November 1956.)

"I Believe the reason he is where he is on the memorial rather than being with the other NCO’s is that directly below him is “PTE SHIELDS, J.” Private John Shields is his Son and was he was killed in 1918. I think they have been put together to allow Father and Son to rest together.

Private Harold Edward Moody

From Private Moody's Service Record;-
He was born on 11 February 1899.
He enlisted into the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment in Northallerton on 22 September 1915, aged only 16. Service No 2706.
His father, Edward, worked for the firm A H Moody in Northallerton, Yorkshire, and somebody from that firm (his mother Mrs M H Moody?) wrote a note giving permission for Harold to enlist into the regiment as a Drummer Boy.
The family address was South End, Northallerton.
On enlistment, Harold Moody was too young for overseas service and spent the next 3 years serving at home with the 4th and 5th Battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment.
On 23 July 1917 he was posted to the 4th Reserve Battalion Royal Scots Regiment. (Service No 202742)
On 28 March 1918 he was posted to serve overseas with the Royal Scots Regiment.
He was posted missing between 9 and 14th April 1918, and was found to have been a Prisoner of War.
He died in a POW hospital, of pneumonia, on 3 July 1918.
