The Memorial Cross for Nunnington stands at a cross-roads on the South East edge of Nunnington village. It is located due East of the parish Churh of St. James and All Saints.
The cross is inscribed
"IN PROUD AND AFFECTIONATE MEMORY
OF THE BRAVE MEN OF NUNNINGTON
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY
IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914 - 1918."

Regiment. Killed 15 July 1917. Aged 31.

Born Nunnington, Enlisted Malton, Resided Nunnington.
Private Maurice Smailes, 33413. 1st/4th Battalion York and Lancaster
Regiment, formerly 45610 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Bean Smailes
and Emma Smailes, of Rectory St., Nunnington, York. Killed 9 October 1917.
Aged 19.
Buried TYNE COT CEMETERY.
Born Nunnington (Yorks), Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Nunnington.
(Younger brother of William, killed 20 days after his brother)

September 1917. Aged 21.
