The cemetery was started in August 1915. In 1916 it was taken over by the 16th (Irish) Division, who held the Loos Salient at the time, and many of their dead were brought back to the cemetery from the front line. Succeeding divisions used the cemetery until October 1918, and men of the same Division, and often the same battalion, were buried side by side.

After the Armistice, this cemetery was one of those used for the concentration of isolated graves from the Loos battlefield. The bodies of 41 men of the 9th Black Watch were brought from positions a little West of Loos, and those of 340 officers and men of other Regiments from different points in the communes of Cambrin, Auchy, Vermelles, Halluch and Loos.

There are now 1,996 Commonwealth burials of the First World War in the cemetery, 277 of them unidentified.

Amongst the graves are those of 18 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

We are very grateful to Chris Weekes (<weebex12@hotmail.com>), Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) and Tom Wheeldon. for having taken the photos of the cemetery and the Yorkshire Regiment headstones.

Lieutenant Percy Montague Phillips.
  Lieutenant Percy Montague Phillips.
13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 25 September 1916.

Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has researched some of Lieutenant Phillips' background and states that he was the son of George Henry & Eliza Emma Phillips. Born 1891 in Limehouse, London. Resided Leytonstone, London.

The following information on Lieut. Phillips was provided by Bob Coulson.

"Percy Phillips sailed with the 13th Battalion as they set out on “The great adventure” from Southampton, landing at Le Havre on June 6th 1916.
In July the battalion took over trenches in the Maroc sector and remained in this area until moving into the Loos sector on September 11th 1916.
In the area of the Village Line and Duke Street the battalion carried out several trench raids and it was during one of these that Lt Percy Montague Phillips was killed in action on September 25th
1916 exactly one year to the day that the first Battle of Loos had begun."

A much fuller biography of Lieutenant Phillips, with especial emphasis on his school days, can be read on the pages of The Bancroftian Network.
