Serjeant John
HARE. 254. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 29 April 1915. Son of George and Jane Hare, of Beverley, Yorks. A member of the Volunteer and Territorial Forces from February, 1906. Killed 29 April 1915. Aged 25. (*) Born Beverley (Yorks), Enlisted Beverley. Buried VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY. (*) From this information, John Hare would have first served when only 16 years old. The photo of Serjeant John Hare is in the tower of St. Mary's Church, Beverley, where he was a bell-ringer. Captain John Alexander
HARPER, MC. Royal Army Medical Corps, attached 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Alex. R. Harper and Agnes Harper, of 8, Oughton Terrace, Ibrox, Glasgow. Killed 14 February 1917. Aged 28. Buried GUARDS' CEMETERY, COMBLES. Amos HARRIS. 19667. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 14 October 1917. Born Middlesbrough, Enlisted Middlesbrough. Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL. Photo provided by Andrew McNamara, great nephew of William Amos Harris, <amc750@hotmail.co.uk>. William Amos' brother, Evan Harris, - also from Middlesbrough, served in the KIng's Royal Rifle Corps (No R/3299) and was killed on 17 September 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. |

Captain William
Alexander HARRISON. Captain Harrison originally joined the Army Service Corps as a Private and by 9 March 1916 was in France. He joined the 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment on 3 July 1918, having been promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 26 June. In December 1918 he was sent to supervise German prisoners at Fort Macdonald near Lille in France. The Green Howards Museum were presented with a collection of items belonging to Captain William Alexander Harrison. They include two illustrated letters from German prisoners written at the end of the First World War and a series of photographs of a POW camp and of Harrison himself. By selecting the thumbnail image on the left, a page is obtained with photos of Captain Harrison, the two illustrated letters, and the story behind them. We are extremely grateful to the Green Howards Museum for permission to present these photos and the story. |

2nd Lieutenant
Frederick Charles HATTON 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Alfred Charles and Louisa Frances Minetta Hatton; husband of Mrs. E. A. M. Hatton, of 4, West Terrace, Richmond, Yorks. Served in the South African Campaign. Killed 30 October 1914. Aged 36. Commemorated Panel 33, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. (Frederick Hatton had only been promoted from CSM to 2nd Lieutenant two weeks previously). John Sly (<sly211@btinternet.com>) has provided some additional information on 2nd Lieutenant Hatton. |

Private Charles
Edwin HICKS. 28420. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Elizabeth Ann and the late William Hicks of Loftus. Husband of Mary Elizabeth. Killed 13 December 1916. Aged 33. Born Loftus, Enlisted Stockton. Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. Charles Edwin Hicks was the father of Freda, Gladys, Harold and Frank Hicks. His younger brother, William Arthur Hicks, also served in the Yorkshire Regiment (the 4th Battalion) and was killed on 29 April 1915. Private Nicholas
Hustin HUDSON. 38712. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Henry Hudson, of 17, Baring St., South Shields, and the late Elizabeth Hudson. Killed 9 October 1918. Aged 28, Born South Shields, Enlisted Portsmouth, Resided South Shields. Commemorated on Panel 5, VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL. "Jim" of the North East War Memorials Project (<jampas@btopenworld.com>) has kindly forwarded the attached information (select the thumbnail image, - left) which comes from a contemporary in-house magazine of the Smith's Dock Company. In this information, Pte Hudson is referred to as "N A Hudson". His middle name would therefore have been "Austin" and not "Hustin", - even though both the CWGC register and SDGW refer to him by the latter name.
