The War Memorial for Pocklington is described on the website "Pocklington History".

There are four faces on the cross, which contain the commemorations of the names of 53 men who lost their lives in the First World War. The above website provides photographs of these four faces, together with a transcription of the names.

Amongst the commemorated names are 18 for soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


2nd Lieutenant Roland Brown. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 13 July 1918.
Buried PERTH CEMETERY (CHINA WALL).
The following notes were provided by Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) regarding Lieutenant Brown;-
" 2nd Lieut. Roland Brown - He enlisted as Pte. 4378 in the West Yorkshires and entered France 6/1/1917. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieut. with the Yorkshires 29/1/1918 and was posted missing on 13/7/1918. He was born in Castleford in 1897 the son of Joseph Hill & Mary Brown. In 1911 he was residing in Pocklington."

Private George Henry Grainger. 28332. 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 25916 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 24 April 1917.
Born Pocklington, Enlisted Pocklington.
Commemorated on Bay 4 and 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private Stanley Hall, 1300. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Lucy Hall, of Rytham Gate, Seaton Ross, York. Killed 17 September 1916. Aged 21.

Private Charles Hotham. 1451. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Cecilia Mary Hotham, of 11, The Pavement, Pocklington, Yorks. Killed 11 June 1915. Aged 22.

Corporal Thomas Jennings. 1452.
5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Jane H. Jennings, of Manor House, Storwood, Melbourne, York. Killed 8 June 1916. Aged 21.

Private Harold Johnson. 1281. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Mr. E. Johnson, of 20, New St., Pocklington, Yorks. Killed 20 September 1916. Aged 20.

Captain Edward Moore Robson, MC. "A" Coy, 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Thomas and Eva Robson, of Pembroke Lodge, Pocklington, York. Died 11 April 1918. Aged 28.
Commemorated on Panel 4, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.

Lieutenant Colonel Frederick William Robson, D S O. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Thomas and Eva Robson, of Pembroke Lodge, Pocklington, York. Killed on 28 March 1918. Aged 30.

Private George Skelton. 241338. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Amy Skelton, of "The Bungalow," Back Lane, Holme, York. Killed 15 July 1917. Aged 21.

Private Thomas Ross Skinner. 201120. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Atkinson and Minnie Skinner, of Pocklington; husband of Eleanor Bell Skinner, of 11, Bickersteth St., Stockton-on-Tees. Died 6 October 1918. Aged 30.

Lance Corporal John William Smith. 243379. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John William and Margaret Smith, of II, Alma Terrace, Pocklington, Yorks. Killed 29 April 1918. Aged 27.
