The Pontefract and District Family History Society website includes an index of names of WW1 Fallen compiled from the Pontefract Roll of Honour (held in the town library) and the town's War Memorials. The index has been provided by Eric Jackson, and he has also included biographical data against the names.
Amongst the names on the list are those of 8 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Private Thomas Brockley. 265943. 18th Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Hannah Brockley of 57 Percy St., Sheffield. Died
at home 26 November 1918. Aged 48.
Born York, Enlisted Pontefract.
Buried PONTEFRACT CEMETERY.
(Additional information : Served 21 years with KOYLI then re-enlisted from
the Reserves 3/11/1914. Discharged 25/4/1918, Tubercule of the lungs.)
Private Robert Alfred Hardcastle. 3/8757. 2nd Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 15 June 1915.
Born Morley (Yorks), Enlisted Leeds, Resided Pontefract.
Commemorated on Panel 12, LE TOURET MEMORIAL.
Captain Frank Hiley. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Thomas and Jane Ann Hiley, of Greyhound Hotel, Pontefract, Yorkshire.
Rose from the ranks, and became Captain through his own efforts. Killed 13
February 1918. Aged 24.

The following biographical notes are provided by Robert Coulson in his Biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Frank Hiley was born in Pontefract in Yorkshire in 1894.
Serving in the ranks as a private soldier his qualities were soon recognised
and he received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and rose rapidly through
the officer ranks. (Frank Hiley joined the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment
in France as a 2nd Lieutenant on 4 Octoer 1915. Ref. Medal Rolls Index card.)
In late 1917 and by now a Captain, Frank Hiley was with the 8th Battalion
when they were deployed to the Italian Front. They arrived in mid November
1917 and were involved in actions around the Piave river in December 1917
and January 1918.
Captain Hiley was killed on February 13th 1918 at the age of 24.
With some of his platoon he was examining an enemy shell which suddenly and
unaccountably exploded killing Captain Hiley and seriously wounding four of
his men."
Private Andrew James Mahon. 21831. 1st Garrison Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 6529 K O Y L I. Son of the late John and
Margaret Ann Mahon, of 9, Hamilton Terrace, Willington, Derby; husband of
Harriet Louisa Mahon, of Cattle Laithe, Knottingley, Yorks. Served in the
South African War. Died 11 July 1918. Aged 38.
Born Rugeley (Staffs), Enlisted Manchester, Resided Knottingley (Yorks).
Buried RAWALPINDI WAR CEMETERY.
Commemorated on the DELHI MEMORIAL (INDIA GATE).
(Incorrectly shown on the Pontefract ROH as being a Trooper in the 1st Bn
Yorkshire Hussars. Also shown as "R James Mahon".)
2nd Lieutenant Arthur Hammond Butler Shipley. 6th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the Rev. Arthur Granville Shipley, M.A., and Caroline
Mary Ellen Shipley, of All Saints' Vicarage, Pontefract, Yorks. Also served
at Gallipoli. Killed 27 September 1916. Aged 21.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
Private John Simms. 23593. 10th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 16 June 1916.
Born Bilston (Staffs), Enlisted Pontefract, Resided Horsefair (Pontefract).
Buried CORBIE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
(Incorrectly shown in the Roll of Honour as "Trooper John Simms of the
Yorkshire Hussars.)
Private Edmond James Withers. 22806. 6th Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Edmund Withers, of 1, Cliffe Villas, Tanshelf
Drive, Pontefract, Yorks, and the late Jane Withers. Killed 9 April 1918.
Aged 23.
Born Barracks (Belfast), Enlisted Pontefract.
Buried SAILLY-LABOURSE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Private Belfred Ward. 11262.
72nd Coy Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 23510 the Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed 30 April 1916.
Born Pontefract (Yorks), Enlisted Pontefract.
Buried BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
