There are two principal War Memorials for Pontefract.

In the centre of the town, in Beastfair (street), - in front of two hotels (the Green Dragon and The Blackmoor Head), the main memorial is situated. This is a Cenotaph with square pillars at each corner. The memorial commemorates the dead of both World Wars, but there are no names. Instead, the following inscription reads "TO THE MEMORY/ OF/ OUR FALLEN COMRADES/ 1914 - 1918/ 1939 - 1945/ THE NAMES OF THE DEAD/ ARE INSCRIBED IN A/ ROLL OF HONOUR/ KEPT/ AMONGST THE ARCHIVES/ OF THE BOROUGH."
A photograph of the Cenotaph is shown at the bottom of this page.

The other memorial, which commemorates the dead of the First World War, is located in the Churchyard of All Saints' Church, Pontefract. This memorial is a simple cross, with the names of the dead commemorated on 7 of 8 panels around the base of the cross. The eighth panel carries the dedication of the memorial.

110 men who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on this memorial, together with two women who were killed in a nearby munitions factory explosion.

Two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial outside All Saints' Church, one of whom was the son of the Vicar of All Saints' Church.

Transcriptions of the names of those commemorated are shown on the GENUKI website.

We are extremely grateful to Colin Hinson for giving us permission to use his photographs of the memorial on this website.
