the Preston Colliery War Memorial is a tapering shaft made of granite on an octagonal pedestal. A bronze Sword of Sacriifice is at the top of the shaft. 43 names of employees of Preston Colliery who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial.

Private Joseph Forster. 15578. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 October 1916.
Born Shankhouse, Enlisted North Shields.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Sapper Thomas Patton. 82220. 170th Tunnelling Coy. Royal Engineers, formerly 17519 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 13 August 1915.
Born Wingate (Co. Durham), Enlisted North Shields (Northumberland).
Buried CAMBRIN MILITARY CEMETERY.

Serjeant Archibald Ernest Russell. 17535.
10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of M. I. Fender (formerly Russell), of 36, Lansdowne Terrace, North Shields. Killed 7 May 1917.
Born Tynemouth (North Shields), Enlisted North Shields.
Buried DOUCHY-LES-AYETTE BRITISH CEMETERY.
(Further information on Archibald Russell from the "Shields Daily News";-
1. 14 July 1916: CORP. RUSSELL WOUNDED. Mrs Russell, of 120 Linskill Street, North Shields has been informed that her son Corp. A. Russell, of the Yorks, has been wounded in Action, and is now in Hospital in Manchester.
2. 27 May 1917: SERGT. ARCHIE E. RUSSELL KILLED. Mrs Russell, 11 Upper Pearson Street, has been officially informed that her husband, Sergt. Archibald Ernest Russell, 10th Yorks, was killed in action on May 7th. Deceased who enlisted at the commencement of the war, was employed by Preston Colliery and was 28 years of age.)
