Puchevillers
British Cemetery (1)
Photo : Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>).
In June 1916, just before the opening of the Battles of the Somme, the 3rd and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations came to Puchevillers. Plots I to V, and almost the whole of Plot VI were made by those hospitals before the end of March 1917. For the next two months the 2nd/1st South Midland Casualty Clearing Station used the cemetery.
Plot VII contains for the most part the graves of men who died in the German advance in 1918, many of whom were buried by the 49th Clearing Station in March 1918, or by the 48th Labour Group in August.
Puchevillers British Cemetery contains 1,763 First World War burials.
Amongst the graves are those of 17 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
We are extremely grateful to Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) who has generously provided the photographs on this page. Malcolm Beavis <malcolm.beavis@yahoo.co.uk> has provided photos of the headstone of his great uncle, Private James William Cave.

Private Horace Steele / Teale.
Harry Teal. His service record survives. He enlisted on 2/2/1915 and was posted missing in the field on 12/6/1917; his parents were William & Margaret Teal of Dalton Holme, Beverley (which is just some extra biographical detail for the record).
Next the Reg.no. 19052 6th Bn., man.
There is a recurring problem with Steele and Teale as both names can appear with and without the last "e" which is an added complication when doing the research. I can only find a relevant Horace Teale in Civil Records and no Horace Steele. For instance, the 1901 Census Record has him born about 1896, living in Pudsey with mother Eliza A Teale (another name problem - she sometimes becomes Elizabeth) but no sign of his father James (they were married in 1876 and had at least 8 children).
A Horace Teale was born in the June Qtr., 1896 in the Wharfedale Registration District in which Yeadon is situated. You will recall that the SDGW record for Horace STEELE has him born in Yeadon and residing in Pudsey - surely too much of a coincidence for it not to be the same man! The 1911 Census has Horace Teale living in Pudsey with father James and stepmother Rebecca Robins (James eventually remarried in 1913 his first wife and Horace's mother having died in 1904).
Horace Teale's name also appears on the Pudsey War Memorial but no one by the name of Steele (or Steel) is listed.
You are familiar with the Military Records except perhaps the Medal Rolls Index and therein lies a little hiccup but a possible clue. There is no Horace Teale recorded but there is a Horace Steel and a Horace Steele (two cards for the same man - Yorkshire Regiment no. 19052). "Steele" records the Victory and British medals but interestingly "Steel" records the 15 Star with the date of entry to Theatre of War as 28/9/1915. This means that if it is Horace Teale, he was barely 18 when he volunteered. Your theory that he used an alias is a good one as "Horace Steele" according to the CWGC was five years older than Horace Teale so he may have lied about his age in order to join up, and the truth only came out when he was wounded and died. The Army would of course have a "missing" Horace Steele which might be why his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial.
