Stan Grosvenor (<csstan@mametz.fsnet.co.uk>) has kindly photographed the memorial and provided the following information on the War Memorial that stands in the grounds of the old Sir William Turner Grammar School.

“The Great War Memorial was erected in 1922, and unveiled on Founders Day of that year. It is an Ionic Cross on a pedestal of red granite, 17 feet from ground level. It was dedicated by the Rev A Pryce.

It occupied a commanding position overlooking the green in front of the school on Coatham Road until 1932 when it was moved, ironically enough by ropes attached to a German Trench Mortar, to the centre of the cloisters between the newly built School hall and the old building of 1868. There it remained until October 12 1965, when it was moved to a position on the grass outside the Headmaster’s Room in the Corporation Road Building. When that School ceased to exist as a Grammar School, it was moved again to the front of the Sir William Turner’s Sixth Form College in Redcar Lane.”

The memorial now stands in front of the Sir William Turner block of the Redcar and Cleveland College on Corporation Road, Redcar. The WW2 Memorial plaque is located on the wall in the entrance hall to that block.
