The World War Memorial for Retford (Notts) is in the form of an Eleanor Cross and is located in the market place in front of the Town Hall. There are two stages to the Memorial, with the lower stage commemorating those who lost their lives in the First World War, and the upper stage for the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. Each stage has four faces.

304 names are commemorated for the First World War, including two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


Serjeant George Davison. 13016. 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary Denis Davison, of 12, Hospital Rd., Retford, Notts, and the late Arthur Davison. Killed 6 November 1918. Aged 25.
Born Ryhope (Sunderland), Enlisted Ryhope.
Buried BETTRECHIES COMMUNAL CEMETERY.

Private Harold Mellor Vessey. 34792. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly TR/5/5690 2nd T R Battn. Son of John William and Sarah Vessey, of 43, Wharton St., Retford, Notts. Killed 13 October 1918. Aged 20.
Born Retford (Notts), Enlisted Retford.
Buried NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY.
