The War Memorial in the churchyard of St. Mary and St. Lawrence,
Rosedale Abbey, is a Celtic wheel cross on a tapering plinth.
The memorial commemorates 15 men who lost their lives in the First World War,
3 in the Second World War, and 1 in a subsequent conflict.
4 men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial,
which is dedicated with the following words;-
"TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT
WAR 1914-1919."
and
"I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE"
Inside the church there is a Roll of Honour from Rosedale who
served, and who returned.
The names of the Yorkshire Regiment soldiers who lost their lives are as below.
Corporal Thomas Henry Mercer, 11432. 6th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Jane Mercer. Killed 6 August 1915.
Aged 36.
Born Farndale (Kirbymoorside), Enlisted Whitby, Resided Grosmont.
Commemorated Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.
Private Frank Peirson, 203879. 10th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of James and Mary Peirson, of Rosedale, Pickering. Killed 4
October 1917. Aged 23.
Born Rosedale Abbey (Yorks), Enlisted Malton, Resided Rosedale (Pickering).
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Private Harry Perrin, 1593. 5th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Charlotte Ann Perrin, of 1, Soulby Yard, Greengate, Malton,
Yorks, and the late Reginald Henry Perrin. Killed 12 June 1915. Aged 22.
Born Whitewall (Malton), Enlisted Pickering, Resided Malton.
Buried HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY.
Private Herbert Cornelius Smith. 5702. 1st/6th Battalion
Durham Light Infantry, formerly 28697 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 5 November
1916.
Born Rosedale Abbey (Yorks), Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided Linthorpe (Midd).
Commemorated Pier and Face 14 A and 15 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
