The War Memorial for Rothwell is situated at the junction between Gillett Lane and Oulton Lane. The memorial is a grade II listed structure first unveiled in November 1923. A life-sized granite statue of an infantryman surmounts the memorial, and the inscriptions read"HONOUR THE FALLEN" at the top and on the pedestal"THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918". The names of 100 men who lost their lives in the First World War are recorded on all four sides. A further inscription on the base reads "1939-1945" and commemorates 39 names.
A transcript of all the names on the memorial, with brief details of each
name, can be found on the Wakefield
Family History Sharing website. Another transcript, but without any details,
is on the Roll
of Honour website.
