This particular War Memorial replaces one that was originally located at Downey House, Church Street, Royton. The original War Memorial consisted of seven plaques mounted on a York stone wall, and had, in turn, previously been located at Royton's parish church.

The current War Memorial is of polished granite, and is located in Royton Park. The memorial commemorates 342 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War, and 95 who lost their lives in the Second World War.

1 soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.

A page on the Manchester and Lancashire Family History website includes further photos of the memorial, and a transcription of all of the names commemorated.

We are very grateful to Mike Berrell (<mike_berrell@ntlworld.com>) for providing the photos of this memorial and for the transcriptions on the above website page.
