The War Memorial for Ryton is at the top of Station Bank, near Ryton Holy Cross Church. The memorial is approached by a flight of steps, and is walled on three sides. On five bronze tablets are inscribed the names of 273 men who lost their lives in the First World War.
The website "Ryton and District War Memorials Project" has a transcription of the names together with photographs of the memorial.
Details of the three soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment and who are named on this Memorial are as below;-
Private James Charlton. 10697. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of the late George and Elizabeth Charlton. Killed 7 August 1915. Aged
27.
Born Ryton-on-Tyne, Enlisted Richmond, Resided Ryton-on-Tyne.
Commemorated on Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.
Private Ernest Robson, 61735.
9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Isabella Robson, of 8, Beverley
Gardens, Barmoor, Ryton, Co. Durham. Killed 24 October 1918. Aged 26.
Born Midgholme (Northumberland), Enlisted Ryton (Co. Durham).
Buried CROSS ROADS CEMETERY, FRANCE.
Private Joseph Wheatley. 38931. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed 7 June 1917.
Born Winlaton (Durham), Enlisted Blaydon, Resided Ryton-on-Tyne.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
