The Saddleworth War Memorial is an obelisk situated on the top of Alderman's Hill (locally known as Pots and Pans Hill).
The obelisk carries commemorative bronze plaques for those who lost their lives in both World Wars, in the following districts;-

Springhead / Delph / Denshaw / Greenfield (1914 - 1918) / Royal George (1914 - 1918) / Greenfield and Grasscroft (1939 - 1945) / Uppermill / Dobcross and Diggle.

A total of 259 names for both World Wars are commemorated on the several plaques.

3 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Private Raymond Ashton, 49878. 9th Battalion The King's (Liverpool Regiment), formerly 28628 Yorkshire Regiment. Joseph and Elizabeth Ashton, Brown Rough Farm, Standedge, Dobcross, near Oldham. Killed 11 August 1918.
Born Reddish (Cheshire), Enlisted Halifax (Yorks), Resided Dobcross (Lancs).
Buried ANZIN-ST. AUBIN BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Fred Cocks. 38231. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Fred and Elizabeth Cocks, of 17, Bridge St., Springhead, Oldham. Killed 25 April 1917. Aged 23.
Born Hey (Lancs), Enlisted Oldham, Resided Springhead.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private Allen Schofield. 30677. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Jonah and Sarah Emma Schofield, of Spring Grove, Greenfield, Oldham. Killed 2 April 1917. Aged 19.
Born Greenfield (Yorks), Enlisted Uppermill, Resided Greenfield.
Buried HENIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
