The Saltburn War Memorial

The Saltburn War Memorual is a black granite cross with the
names of those who lost their lives in the First World War commemorated on
the front base of the cross.
The cross at the top of the memorial is a horizontal composition showing Christ
in the tomb with drapery hanging down into the shaft of the cross. Theremainder
of he space filled by outstretched wings of angels stooping over head and
feet of the figure of Christ,
46 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated, and on two side panels 20 names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War are commemorated,
23 men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.

the late William Bates. Died 22 March 1918. Aged 24.

Died 26 October 1917.

Regiment. Died 7 August 1915.

2nd Lieutenant Erasmus Darwin. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son
of Horace and Ida Darwin, of The Orchard, Cambridge. Grandson of naturalist
Charles Darwin and statistician Thomas Farrer, 1st Baron Farrer. Died 24 April
1915. Aged 33.

Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Died 11 April 1918. Aged 48.

Captain John Anthony Harris, MC. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Mrs. J. Harris, of 3, Leven St., Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorks, and the
late Col. J. Harris, V. D. Died 26 November 1917. Aged 27.

The following biographical information is taken from Robert Coulson's Biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
John Harris was born at North Ormesby near Middlesbrough in 1890.
A member of the Middlesbrough-raised 12th Battalion, Teesside Pioneers, he
sailed with the battalion from Southampton to Le Havre on June 1st 1916.
The 12th Battalion were pioneers to the 40th Division but moved around a lot
being loaned out to other divisions at times.
At the end of October 1917 Captain Harris and the battalion moved into the
Moislains area and were then involved in the Battle of Cambrai. In fierce
fighting in Bourlon Wood Captain Harris was “killed when reconnoitring
the forward area” on November 26th 1917 at the age of 27.
Private Arthur Ernest Hinchley, 325066. 1st/8th Battalion West Yorkshire
Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), formerly 22789 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son
of John and M. Hinchley, of 21, Montrose St., Saltburn-by-the-Sea; husband
of Lillian Hinchley, of Arlington House, Windsor Rd., Saltburn-by-the-Sea,
Yorks. Killed 1 December 1917. Aged 26.
Born Saltburn, Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided Saltburn.

2nd Lieutenant Harold Gibson Hornsby. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Only son of Jane Hornsby, of 7, Fladgate Rd., Leytonstone, London, and younger
son of the late Michael Hornsby, of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. On the Solicitor's
Staff of His Majesty's Customs and Excise. Died 1 July 1916. Aged 28.
Buried FRICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY.
The following biographical details on Lieutenant Hornsby were provided by
Robert Coulson in his "Biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment";-
"Harold Hornsby was born in Saltburn by the Sea in North Yorkshire
in 1888, the son of the late Michael Hornsby.
He followed a legal career and joined the Solicitors Office of the Customs
and Excise in London in June of 1910.
At the onset of war he enlisted as a private soldier with the Gloucestershire
Regiment.
In January 1915 he transferred to the Hussars and was then gazetted with the
Yorkshire Regiment at Easter 1915.
2nd Lt Hornsby joined the 7th Battalion in October 1915 at Steenvoorde and
spent time in and out of the line around Hooge and the Menin Road up to Christmas
of that year. He was with the battalion during the “Actions at the Bluff”
to the south of Ypres in February of 1916 and in June the battalion moved
south to prepare for the forthcoming Somme offensive.
2nd Lt Harold Gibson Hornsby was killed in action on July 1st 1916 at the
age of 28.
Three companies of the battalion attacked the German held village of Fricourt
at 2-30pm, “Officers and men were literally mown down”. Harold
Hornsby was one of 15 officers killed or wounded in this action while over
330 men suffered the same fate.
His grave today lies in Fricourt British Cemetery close to where he fell and
his name is remembered on the 7th Battalion's memorial also situated in the
cemetery.
His mother Mrs Jane Hornsby was living at 7 Fladgate Road, Leytonstone in
London."

Died 25 April 1915.

of Elizabeth Simpson (formerly Leatham), of 1, Convalescent St., Saltburn,
and the late John Leatham; husband of Sarah Jane Leatham, of 2, Convalescent
St., Saltburn. Died 12 March 1915. Aged 35.
Born Saltburn, Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Saltburn.

Killed 7 October 1916.

Regiment. Husband of Sarah Emma Harrison (formerly Richardson), of 31, Coral
St., Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorks. Died 15 September 1916. Aged 23.

Private James Alfred Robinson. 14666. 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's
(West Riding Regiment), formerly 11016 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Alfred
and Hannah Thirza Robinson, of 45, Coral St., Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Died 21
August 1915. Aged 20.

August 1917. Aged 24.

St., Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Yorks. Killed 22 September 1918. Aged 37.
