The War Memorial for the Men of Crompton in Shaw (Oldham, Lancs)

This imposing War Memorial is located in the Memorial Gardens off the High Street in Shaw. The memorial consists of an allegorical male figure with sword, surrounded by six children and two beasts. This sculpture sits on top of a granite base, on which metal panels commemorate those who lost their lives in the two World Wars.

The memorial commemorates 346 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War, and 76 who lost their lives in the Second World War.

2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

Private Ralph Platt. 42879. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 160349 R F A. Husband of Eliza Platt, of 65, Shaw St., Oldham, Lancs. Killed 14 May 1917. Aged 40.
Born Oldham (Lancs), Enlisted Shaw (Lancs).
Buried RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND.
