The Shildon War Memorial is situated at the entrance to Shildon's
parish church, beside a building that used to house a bank.
The memorial is a pedestal, with a bronze sculpture of a soldier surmounting
it. On the front of the pedestal is a bronze wreath, with the dedication;-
The names of the dead from the First World War are on two bronze panels on either side of the pedestal. The names of the dead from the Second World War are on a single bronze panel at the rear of the pedestal.
There are 265 names of the dead of the First World War. Of these names 15 are for soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment. Details of soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment can be found below.

3 December 1917. Aged 30.
Born New Shildon, Enlisted Stokesley, Resided New Shildon (Co. Durham).

Private Henry Raymond Greener, 18062. 8th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. M. C. H. Greener, of 79, Albert St., Shildon,
Co. Durham, and the late W. Greener. Died 7 October 1917. Aged 25.
Born Shildon, Enlisted Darlington, Resided Shildon.
Commemorated on Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Private Charles Alfred Hague. 16377. 2nd Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Head Hague and Helen Hague, late of Shildon,
Co. Durham; husband of Lily Hague, of Swaledale House, Durham Rd., Darlington.
Born at Stockton. Died 4 April 1917. Aged 25.
Born Stockton-on-Tees, Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Shildon (Durham).
Buried in WARLINCOURT HALTE BRITISH CEMETERY, SAULTY.
Private Samuel Longstaff. 16378. 2nd Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 15 June 1915.
Born Old Shildon (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided New Shildon.

Private Alfred MacDowell. 34829.
2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), formerly 4340
the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Elizabeth MacDowell, of 1, Lumley
Crescent, Shildon, Co. Durham. Killed 12 September 1918. Aged 21.

Private Joseph Matthews, 18059. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of George and Agnes Matthews; husband of Ethel May Chipchase
(formerly Matthews), of 51, Garbutt St., Shildon, Co. Durham. Killed 23 July
1916. Aged 22.

(It appears that the full name of Private Murton is "Robert Major Murton"
as shown on the Eye (Suffolk) War Memorial, although as "Robert Murton"
in the CWGC and SDGW data. See Peter Clarke's notes.)

Regiment. Killed 5 July 1916.

(Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) comments that the WW1
Pension Ledgers and Index Cards 1914-1923 shows that his mother was named
Frances Mary, and that the 1911 Census shows her family including John Thomas
living in Shildon.)
