The Town War Memorial in Silsden
(Photo : Stan Grosvenor (<csstan@mametz.fsnet.co.uk>)
Stan Grosvenor (<csstan@mametz.fsnet.co.uk>) has photographed
the Town War Memorial in Silsden. The Memorial is situated in a pleasant small
garden adjacent to the library and with a small car park to the other side.
It is on the left, coming from Addingham, in the town centre.
There are 105 names etched to three sides of the column for the Great War. The
WW2 names are on the the right side plinth. Interestingly, the inscription on
the base of the Memorial records that 603 men returned to Silsden at the end
of the Great War, against the 105 who died.
Only one name of a soldier from the Yorkshire Regiment is recorded for the Great
War, - Private Percy Lambert.
Private Percy Lambert, 34851. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment
(formerly 86203 91st T R Battalion). Son of Thomas and Selina Lambert, of
17, Elliott St., Silsden, Keighley, Yorks. Killed 11 April 1918. Aged 19.
Born Silsden (Yorks), Enlisted Keighley, Resided Silsden.
Buried CROIX-DU-BAC BRITISH CEMETERY, STEENWERCK.
