The Snainton War Memorial is at the East end of the village. It sits beside the A170 (Thirsk to Scarborough road), at the junction with Lairs Lane and Barker's Lane. The memorial commemorates 18 men who lost their lives in the First World War, of whom 8 were men who had served in the Yorkshire Regiment.


Private Harry Beswick, 235701. 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), formerly 1919 Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 4 November 1918.
Born Snainton (Yorks), Enlisted East Ayton (Yorks), Resided Snainton.
Buried SNAINTON (ST. STEPHEN) CHURCHYARD.

Private Arthur Dickinson. 28325. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 October 1916.
Born Snainton (Yorks), Enlisted Scarborough, Resided Snainton.

Private Smales Dickinson, 242717. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 18 May 1917.

Private Alfred Wrightson Hardwick, 26250. 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 27 March 1916.

Private William Robert Miller. 1969. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 29 May 1915.
Born Malton, Enlisted East Ayton, Resided Scarborough.
Buried BEDFORD HOUSE CEMETERY.
(The name on the memorial is "William R Milner", but there is no "Milner" name that provides any likelihood of being commemorated on this particular memorial. The names "Miller" and "Milner" are genealogically similar.)

Private John Howcroft Ruston. 1801. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Mrs. W. Allen, of Wydale High Cottage, Brompton-by-Sawdon, Yorks. Killed 17 September 1916.
Born Pocklington, Enlisted Scarborough, Resided Pocklington (Yorks).
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Leonard Skilbeck. 20405. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Joseph and Eliza Skilbeck, of High St., Snainton, Yorks. Killed 26 October 1917. Aged 33.
Born Guisborough, Enlisted Scarborough, Resided Snainton.
