The War Memorial in the Chapel of Snape Castle includes both the names of those who served and those who fell in the First World War. The names of those recorded as killed in the First World War are;-

(1) Roger Newsome (<renewsome@live.co.uk>) points out that there was a Thomas Burkitt of the 7th Battalion King's (Shropshire Light Infantry), - Born Masham, Enlisted Shrewsbury, Resided Masham, killed 14 July 1916, is a better "fit" for this name. There is no Thomas Burkitt on the Masham memorial.

Philip Morris (<philip150@btinternet.com>) has researched both George and Thomas Burkitt. (Note spelling of name). Both are brothers, and are shown on the Sheriffhales (Shropshire) War Memorial.
Philip provides the following information on Thomas Burkitt;-
Private, Thomas Burkitt, 14605, 7th King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 14 July 1916. Born Snape, Yorkshire, enlisted Shrewsbury; Son of Wharfe and Mary Burkitt, of Snape, Yorkshire, working has a gardener at Lilleshall House, Lilleshall Gardens, Sheriffhales, Newport, Shropshire

(2) Correct spelling should be "J I Johnson".
(3) The correct spelling is"Tilly", This is Lieut Colonel C W Tilly of the Durham Light Infantry.


Private Harold Binks, 235223. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 23 March 1918.
Commemorated Bay 5, Arras Memorial.
Born Well, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.

Private John Ingham Johnson, 18772. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died of Wounds 8 August 1915.
Buried VOORMEZEELE ENCLOSURE No.3.
Born Snape, Enlisted Richmond, Resided Snape

Private Josias Oyston. 26581. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Mary Jane Oyston, of Snape, Bedale, Yorks. Killed 31 August 1916. Aged 24.
Buried BERKS CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Born Thornaby-on-Tees, Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Snape (Bedale).

Lance Corporal Harold Victor Steel, MM, 38500. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed (Italy) 7 September 1918. Aged 21.
Son of William and Sarah Ann Steel, of Snape Bedale, Yorkshire.
Buried MAGNABOSCHI BRITISH CEMETERY.
Born Albough, Enlisted Bedale, Resided Snape.
