The Memorial Cross outside the Church of St. Chad, Sproxton, is in the form of a cross on top of a four sided base. The sides of this base are inscribed;-

(South West face)   1914 - 1919, TO THE MEMORY OF CHARLES WILLIAM REGINALD, 2ND, EARL OF FEVERSHAM, BORN MAY 8TH, 1879, LIEUT COLONEL, 21ST, BATT. KING'S ROYAL RIFLES, KILLED IN ACTION NEAR FLERS, FRANCE, SEPTEMBER 15TH, 1916.

(North West Face)   TO THE MEMORY OF PTE. ROBERT DOUTHWAITE, 9TH, YORKS REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, JUNE 7TH 1917, AGED 22 YEARS.

(North East face)   O, VALIANT HEARTS, WHO TO YOUR GLORY CAME - THROUGH DUST AND CONFLICT AND THROUGH BATTLE FLAME; TRANQUIL YOU LIE, YOUR KNIGHTLY VIRTUE PROVED, YOUR MEMORY HALLOWED IN THE LAND YOU LOVED.

(South East Face)  TO THE MEMORY OF DRIVER TOM SUNLEY, 8TH, BATT. MACHINE GUN CORPS. ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED FEBRUARY 20TH, 1919, AGED 27 YEARS.


Private Robert Douthwaite, 36419. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Douthwaite, of Sproxton, Helmsley, Yorks. Killed 7 June 1917. Aged 22.
Enlisted Helmsley.
