The Staithes War Memorial stands at the top of the bank that leads down into the lower part of the village, and the harbour. The memorial is inscribed;-

Staithes War Memorial
To Perpetuate the memory of Those Who Made
The Supreme Sacrifice for King and Country
During the Great War 1914 - 1918

However, the Memorial not only contains the names of the soldiers and sailors from the First World War, together with a woman munitions worker, but soldiers, airmen, and a large number of sailors from the Second World War. The memorial is curious in that the soldiers of the First World War are apparently all listed as being from the Yorkshire Regiment,- but weren't! Also, Sergeant Green and Corporal Rigg, with almost identical service numbers and in the same Battalion, were killed on the same day in Gallipoli.

Glenn Cook (<glenncook01@ntlworld.com>) has written to say that not only does his grandfather, John Cook, appear on this Memorial for the First World War, but that John Cook's youngest son, Owen Cook, is listed as one of the dead from the Second World War.

Hazel Hickman (<hickman379@btinternet.com>) comments that two sailors named Burton Verrill are shown on the memorial.
Hazel points out that
For the First World War, Deck Hand Burton Verrill (Born 1847) died 29/11/1918 - Royal Naval Reserve Age 18 H.M.P.M.S. Duchess of Hamilton.
In the Second World War, Able Seaman Burton Verrill (Born 1919) died 13/05/1944 - Aged 25 on S.S. Empire Heath (Sunderland) Merchant Navy.
