Stockport's Art Gallery and War Memorial had previously been the home of Stockport Grammar School, but the first foundation stone for the War Memorial was laid in 1923 and the Art Gallery and War Memorial were formally opened in October 1925. The War Memorial and Art Gallery is located at the junction of Wellington Rd and Greek St, Stockport, Cheshire.
The War Memorial is comprehensively described in the Imperial War Museum's War Memorials Register.
The Memorial has 2164 names commemorating the dead of the First
World War, with 755 names for the Second World War. A further 29 names of
civilians are commemorated as having lost their lives in the Second World
War.
The names of all those commemorated on the memorial are listed on "Carl's
Cam" website.
