The base of the memorial cross outside Swainby's Holy Cross Church is inscribed;-
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918".
"I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT. I HAVE FINISHED MY COURSE."

Born Swainby (Yorks), Enlisted Middlesbrough (Yorks), Resided Northallerton (Yorks).
Commemorated Panel 54 to 60 and 163A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Private William Herbert Wilson. 30117. 1st Battalion Border Regiment, formerly 3263 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 27 January 1917.
Born Danby (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton (Yorks), Resided Swainby.
Commemorated Pier and Face 6 A and 7 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
