Memorials On Line website
The Thorne War Memorial is located in Thorne Park. The memorial is an octagonal pillar with scrolled supports surmounting an ocatgonal plinth with oval plaques on each face with the names of those commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War. At the foot of two plaques is a tablet commemorating the names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War. The whole is set on two steps.
113 names are commemorated for the First World War, and 36 for the Second.
A website on the History of Thorne includes information on the War Memorial. Much of the information on this website has been provided by Tony Brookes (<bonytrux96@btinternet.com>), who has kindly provided further information on the two Yorkshire Regiment names on the memorial. Tony Brookes also provided a photo of the commemorative panel on the memorial on which the names of these two soldiers can be found.
There is also a memorial commemorating thise who lost their lives in the
First World War in the Church of St. Nicholas, Thorne. This memorial
is in the form of a wooden tablet on which the names of those commemorated
have been painted.
Unfortunately, there do not appear to be any photos of this memorial, beyond
a photo supplied by Tony Brookes on which the two Yorkshire Regiment soldiers
names can be seen.
