Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has forwarded a photo of the War Memorial for Thorney Abbey in Cambridgseshire, which includes the name of two soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment. The War Memorial is a stone tablet in the Church of SS Mary and Botoplh.
Private James William Gedney, 35144. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Formerly 34619 9th T R Battalion. Died 8 December 1918.
Born Whaplode (Lincs), Enlisted Wisbech, Resided Thorney (Cambs).
Buried NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY.
(Note : Although SDGW reports that Private Gedney was "Killed in Action", he would, in fact, have been a Prisoner of War. The Green Howards Gazette of September 1918 reported him as missing, - hence captured in about July 1918, and as a POW in March 1919. Niederzwehren Cemetery was used for the burial of POWs who died in German camps.)
Private Charles William Scott, 5247. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Formerly 2413 Cambridgeshire Regiment. Son of Walter Alexander Scott and Ada
Annie Scott, of Oakham, Rutland. Died of wounds 13 November 1916. Aged 19.
Born Oakham (Rutland), Enlisted Thorney.
Buried DERNANCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
(Note : Richard Roberts has carried out further research into the life of Private Scott and has the information that "....in 1911 (by which time both his parents were dead), he was living in Thorney with his uncle John Goodband Miles (his wife was named Fanny) who was Stationmaster at Thorney Station.")
