The Thornton-le-Beans War Memorial

Outside the Chapel of Ease in Thornton-le-Beans, South of Northallerton, is a simple stone War Memorial in the form of a cross. This memorial bears the name of a single soldier. The dedication on this memorial reads;-

"IN LOVING MEMORY OF
PRIVATE
ARTHUR LAWRENCE
HAMILTON
YOUNGEST SON OF
JOHN & MARY HAMILTON, SALT KILN (*)
WHO FELL IN ACTION IN FRANCE
SEP 16 1918 AGED 24 YEARS
"HE NOBLY DID HIS DUTY AND WAS
BURIED ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE"
(There are further words on the base of the memorial but these are no longer legible)

(*) Saltkiln is a farm just South of Thornton-le-Beans.


Private Arthur Lawrence Hamilton, 238212. 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 201018 (3559) 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 16 September 1918. Aged 24.
Born Northallerton, Enlisted Northallerton (Yorks), Resided Northallerton.
