(1) Major RICHARD HILL is buried in the churchyard of All Saints' Church, though his headstone could not be found.
(2) The deaths in action of EDWIN HILL and ROBERT HILL are recorded on the headstone of BERTIE HILL (died 28 December 1918), in the churchyard of All Saints' Church. All three were the sons of Robert and Hannah Hill of Thornton-le-Dale.
(3) There are NO records of a Sejeant Herbert Coulson (in any regiment), but there WAS a Private Bertie Coulson of the 7th Battalion from Thornton Dale.
(4) At the time of his death, John Robert Waller Was a Private in the East Kent Regt. He had previously served as a Private in the Yorkshire Regiment, and had been twice wounded.

Private John Thomas Brewster. 22867. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of William Brewster, of High Dalby Farm, Lockton, Pickering. Killed 9 June1917.Aged 37.
Born Thornton-le-Dale (Yorks), Enlisted Malton, Resided Pickering.
Buried LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Bertie Coulson. 35999. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 12 May 1917.
Born Pickering (Yorks), Enlisted Malton, Resided Thornton Dale (Pickering).
Commemorated Bay 5, Arras Memorial.

Lance Corporal George Elliott, 6506. 1st/4th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 3056 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Clara Elliott, of Paper Mill Farm, Ellerburne, Pickering. Killed 24 November 1916. Aged 19.
Enlisted Thornton Dale (Yorks), Resided Pickering (Yorks).
Buried WARLINCOURT HALTE BRITISH CEMETERY, SAULTY.

Private George William Grayson, 36621. 7th Battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry, formerly 28072 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 October 1918.
Born Thornton Dale (Yorks), Enlisted Pickering, Resided Thornton Marishes.
Buried GREVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY.

Major Richard Hill. 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Evereld Hill, of Thornton Hall, Thornton-le-Dale; husband of Gertrude Mary Hill, of Thornton-le-Dale. Died at home 17 February 1915. Aged 37.

Private Robert Hill, 7265. 1st / 9th Battalion D L I, formerly 30602 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 5 November 1916.
Born Thornton Dale, Enlisted Richmond, Resided Malton (Yorks).
Commemorated Pier and Face 14 A and 15 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private John William Myers. 27342. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Mary Ellen Stubbs, of 3, Mill Lane, Seamer Rd., Scarborough. Killed 6 August 1915. Aged 19.
Born Thornton Dale (Yorks), Enlisted Malton, Resided Thornton Marishes.
Commemorated Panel 44 and 45, Loos Memorial.

Lance Corporal Thomas Newton Smithies. 2678. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late John and Emma Smithies, of Thornton-le-dale, Yorkshire. Killed 4 September 1916. Aged 27.
Enlisted Malton.
Buried FORCEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION.

Private John Robert Waller. G/14651. 7th Battalion Buffs (East Kent Regiment), formerly 8356 Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Annie Waller, of 26, Westonville Terrace, Winter St., Sheffield, late of Thornton-le-Dale, Pickering, and the late Vickerman Waller. Killed 3 October 1918. Aged 33.
Born Thornton-le-Dale (Yorks), Enlisted Pickering (Yorks), Resided Thornton-le-Dale (Yorks).
Buried ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN.

Private John Robert Webster. 2161. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 17 August 1916.
Born Thornton Dale, Enlisted Pickering, Resided Thornton Dale.
Buried STRAND MILITARY CEMETERY.
