The War Memorial for Thornton-le-Street is located in the churchyard of St. Leonard's, Thornton-le-Street. The memorial is in the form of a Celtic cross and is dedicated

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY
OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

Seven names are commemorated on the memorial, including two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


Private Herbert Dowson, 10701. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Elizabeth Dowson, of Sandholme Farm, Thornton-le-Street, Thirsk, Yorks. Killed on 26 October 1917. Aged 22.
Born Thirsk, Enlisted Thirsk.
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, Tyne Cot Memorial.

Private John Thomas Hunter.24409. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Mr. W. Hunter, of Mill House, Osmotherley, Northallerton, Yorks. Killed 10 July 1916. Aged 19.
Born Leyburn, Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Newsham (Thirsk).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORAL.


The Thornton-le-Street War Memorial was unveiled at a service held on 2 October 1921. A copy of the Order of Service has been preserved, and is available here for viewing as an Adobe PDF file. This Order of Service has been forwarded to this website by Christine Dowson, a descendant of Herbert Dowson (one of those named on the Memorial).
