The cemetery was begun by French troops in May, 1915, and the
trench, and consequently the cemetery, were named from the Arab version of
the town of Mequinez in Morocco, from which these troops had come. The cemetery
was taken over by British units in February, 1916, and besides its present
name it was called at times Pioneer Point, Mechanics Trench and Corons d'Aix.
There are now nearly 200, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site.
Of these, a small number are unidentified and a special memorial is erected
to one soldier from the United Kingdom whose grave cannot now be found.
Amongst the graves are 13 for soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment (photos and
details below).
We are extremely grateful to Chris Cosgrove (<trainscpc@aol.com>) for the photos of the headstones.
