The War Memorial for Ushaw Moor is a large stone plaque erected
on the South East wall of St. Luke's Church. It replaces the original memorial
which used to be in the Memorial Hall, - this latter hall having been demolished.
The names on the Memorial are for both the First and Second World Wars.
Five of the names are for soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment.
One soldier of the Yorkshire Regiment who resided in Ushaw Moor is not named
on the Memorial, - Private Edward Mahan.
Private Edward Dunn. 16729. 8th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Joseph and Jessie Dunn, of 14, Dale St., Ushaw Moor; husband
of Annie Dunn, of Carlton House, Ushaw Moor Colliery, Durham. Killed 10 July
1916. Aged 25.
Born Ushaw Moor, Enlisted Durham, Resided Ushaw Moor.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
Private George Elliss. 16157. 6th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 31 October 1915.
Born Trimdon, Enlisted Durham, Resided Ushaw Moor.
Commemorated on Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Regiment. Killed 14 May 1917.
