green in Washington, adjacent to the parish church. The names on the memorial
are not only for those of the First World War, but also for the Second World
war and more recent conflicts.

(Although records only show him as "Charles Ball", the Wessington
U3A War Memorials Project show him as Charles Robert Ball. His brother
William John Ball served in the RNVR and was killed on 15 May 1917.)

Died Q4 1918. Aged 36.
George Golden is not listed in either the CWGC register or SDGW. From his
pension record, however, it can be seen that he was discharged as unfit for
service on 5 February 1918, with his illness (acute nephritis) being "attributable
to service during the present war."
