The War Memorial for Whitley Bay (1) The War Memorial for Whitley Bay (1)

The Whitley Bay War Memorial is a granite cenotaph standing on a stepped base and surrounded by 19 stone pillars. The pillars used to be joined by a chain between them. The memorial is situated at the Southern end of the Links, opposite the distinctive building of Spanish City.
The names of those commemorated are on a series of metal panels on the four sides of the memorial. Those for the First World War are in bronze; those for the Second World War appear to be in steel. Several of these panels were stolen in 1996, but were subsequently replaced. The First World War commemorations are now badly weathered and difficult to read in parts.

258 names of men who fell in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial, and a further 255 for those who died in the Second World War. A transcription of all the names can be found on the website for the North East War Memorials Project.

4 men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

We are very grateful for Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>) for providing the photographs of this memorial.
