The Whitwood War Memorial is located in Whitwood (Castleford) Cemetery.
The memorial is a four sided shelter with wooden bench seating on each side. Plaques commemorating those who lost their lives in the First World War are mounted on each wall above these seats.

106 names are commemorated on these plaques. The plaques have been photographed by Betty Longbottom, and are shown on the Yorkshire Indexers website together with a transcription of the names.

Six soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Private George Baker. 16190. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late George and Sarah Ann Baker, of Whitwood, Normanton; husband of Lena Baker, of 46, Church View, Whitwood, nr. Normanton, Yorks. Killed 3 July 1916. Aged 20.
Born Whitwood (Yorks), Enlisted Pontefract. Resided Whitwood (Nr Normanton).
Buried LA NEUVILLE BRITISH CEMETERY, CORBIE.
(SDGW gives No as 18190)

Lance Corporal Charles Henry Brown. 7860. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 12 April 1918.
Born Castleford, Enlisted Scarborough, Resided Castleford.
Commemorated on Panel 4, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.

Private George Darlison, 201857. 1st/5th Manchester Regiment, formerly 23607 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Emma and the late Henry Darlison, of Castleford, Yorks. Killed 30 March 1918. Aged 23.
Enlisted Castleford (Yorks).
Buried DOULLENS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION No.1.

Private Harry Griffiths. 57701. 13th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Owen and Maria Griffiths, of 3, Back Lumley St., Hightown, Castleford, Yorks. Died 28 August 1919. Aged 22.
Born Castleford (Yorks), Enlisted Castleford, Resided Whitwood Mere (Castleford).
Commemorated on the ARCHANGEL MEMORIAL.

Private Arthur Lowe. 24232. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 28 November 1917.

Private Daniel Townend, 23770. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1July 1916.
