The War Memorial for Witton Gilbert

The War Memorial for Witton Gilbert is a cross mounted on a square base. The Memorial is at the top end of the village, on Sacriston Lane, and is well away from the village centre.
Private Joseph Armstrong, 3/8756. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 18 October 1916.
Born Witton Gilbert (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Barnard Castle.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Incorrectly shown on the Witton Gilbert War Memorial as serving in the East
Yorkshire Regiment.)

Regiment, formerly 24493 East Yorks Regt. Son of William and Mary Knowlson,
of Ushaw Moor, Co. Durham. Killed 7 June 1917. Aged 23.
Born Haswell (Durham), Enlisted Durham.
Buried LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.
Private Henry Overton, 19492. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of George & Maria Overton. Husband of Catherine Overton.
Died at home 17 November 1919. Aged 37.
Born Seaham Harbour.

Private John James Smeatham. 38663. 6th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 27 August 1917.
Born Unsworth (Durham), Enlisted Sacriston, Resided Witton Gilbert (Durham).

Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Louise Walker, of 21A, North View, Colliery
Row, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Killed 26 April 1917. Aged 27.
Born Blaydon, Enlisted Durham.
