Richard Roberts (<richard@nosnailshere.co.uk>) supplies the following information on the Woodville (Wesleyan School), Derbyshire, War Memorial and the name of the Yorkshire Regiment soldier commemorated on it;-

"This war memorial is situated on the High Street in Woodville. It was erected to the memory of Mr W Cousins, headmaster of the local Wesleyan School and 55 of his pupils who died in WW1. Amongst the names commemorated is that of Pte. Albert Canner who formerly served in the Yorkshire Regiment.

Albert Canner was born in 1892 the son of Thomas and Emily Canner of Woodville. The name below his is that of his brother, Thomas Arthur Canner who served in the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regt.). Thomas Canner died in Greece on 6 December 1918 (towards the end of the influenza epidemic).


Private Albert Canner. 36021. 25th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, formerly 5/37160 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 12 October 1917.
Born Gresley (Derby), Enlisted Burton-on-Trent (Staffs).
