The War Memorial, - Wortham (Suffolk)

The War Memorial for Wortham (Suffolk) is a Latin cross on a stepped base and is situated in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church, Wortham. Inside the church are two Rolls of Honour, - one for the First World War and one for the Second World War.

35 names are commemorated on the memorial as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 3 names are commemorated for the Second World War.

We are very grateful to Peter Clarke who has provided the photos of the memorial, together with one of the First World War Roll of Honour in the church. Peter Clarke has also provided extensive biographical information on the names that are commemorated.

Two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

Private Frank Hubbard, 33104.
2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 3738 Norfolk Regt. Son of Harry and Alice Hubbard, of Mill Way, Wortham, Diss. Killed 29 September 1917. Aged 24.
Born Wortham Diss (Norfolk), Enlisted Norwich, Resided Wortham Diss.
Buried NAVES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
(Private Hubbard is shown on the Roll of Honour as having served in the 4th Battalion Norfolk Regiment. SDGW also shows him as having previously served in the Norfolk Regiment.
The Medal Rolls Index card. however, shows him as having previously been in the Northumberland Fusiliers.)

Private Dennis Wilby. 29984.
2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 38231 Notts & Derbyshire Regt. Son of George and Florence Wilby, of Church Rd., Wortham, Diss, Norfolk. Killed 18 October 1916. Aged 20.
Born Burgate (Suffolk), Enlisted Grantham.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Private Wilby is shown on the Roll of Honour as having served in the K O Y L I. He is also shown as being named Denis George Wilby, - as oposed to "Dennis" in the CWGC / SDGW records.)
