Standing outside the Church of Ss Philip and James in Clifton, York, is a memorial to the parishioners who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial is a cross on a tapering plinth, and commemorates 48 names of parishioners.
The memorial is located close to the A19 main road into York.

2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Private Percival Dunning, 8298. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 7 June 1917.
Born Thornaby, Enlisted Richmond, Resided York.
Commmemorated Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Lieutenant Reginald Oakley. 15th Battalion attached to 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Caleb and Ellen Oakley, of 39, Grosvenor Terrace, York. Born Altofts, Normanton, Yorks. Killed 25 August 1916. Aged 21.
Buried BERKS CEMETERY EXTENSION.
The following biographical information is taken from Robert Coulson's Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Reginald Oakley was born at Altofts near Normanton in Yorkshire in 1895.
He was attached to the 8th Battalion and saw action with them in the summer of 1916 during the Somme offensive.
In July and early August the 8th Battalion fought at Horseshoe Trench, Becourt Wood, Contalmaison and Munster Alley, before being relieved on August 7th.
2nd Lt Oakley and the battalion then moved by train via Bailleul to Steenewerck and then marched to Papot arriving on August 22nd.
They were detailed to take over trenches at Papot and it was during the relief of the battalion in the line that 2nd Lt Reginald Oakley was killed on August 25th 1916 at he age of 21."
