The Calvary at St. Helen's Church. Amotherby.

The First World War memorial at Amotherby is a Calvary, with the names of the men who fell in the war attached to a metal plate at the base of the cross. The plate is now heavily weathered, and it is extremely difficult to read the names and the dedication. However, by use of photo enhancement, the dedication and the names on the memorial are as follows;-

5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 11 November 1916.

Lance Corporal Joseph Holliday. 23520. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry),
formerly 2121 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 16 September 1916.
Enlisted Bridlington, Resided Malton (Yorks).
Commemorated Pier and Face 5 C and 12 C, Thiepval Memorial.
Lance Corporal Thomas Newton Smithies. 2678. 5th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of the late John and Emma Smithies, of Thornton-le-dale, Yorkshire.
Killed 4 September 1916. Aged 27.
Enlisted Malton.
Buried FORCEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY AND EXTENSION.
Lance Corporal Laurence William Suggitt. 241538. 13th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Margaret Escrit Suggitt, of Bleak House, Old
Malton, Yorks. Killed 13 April 1918. Aged 22.
Enlisted Malton (Yorks).
Commemorated Panel 4, Ploegsteert Memorial.
Private John Wilson. 240407. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of James and Annie Wilson, of Wombleton. York. Killed 14 November 1917.
Aged 21.
