The Bingley War Memorial

The Bingley War Memorial is located in Myrtle Park in Bingley.

The memorial is an ornate floriated cross, with a wheel formed by lancet shapes with a Fleur de Lys design at the top. The cross is mounted on an octagonal base, where the dedication and commemorations are carved into the sides of the base.

242 names are commemorated as having lost their lives inthe First World War, and 83 in the Second World War.

4 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Private Joseph Ellison. 20451. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of C. Shackleton (formerly Ellison,). of 3, Sun St., Cullingworth, Bradford, Yorks. Killed 16 February 1916.
Born Bingley (Yorks), Enlisted Keighley, Resided Cullingworth.
Buried LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Fred Halliday, 38168. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Halliday, of 38 York St., Bingley, Yorkshire. Killed 22 August 1918. Aged 32.
Born Shipley (Yorks), Enlisted Bingley.
Buried CHAUNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY BRITISH EXTENSION.

Serjeant Joseph Heaton. 6149. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Elijah and Maria Heaton; husband of Ethelia H. White (formerly Heaton), of 9, Forester's St., Denholm, Bradford. Killed 30 October 1914. Aged 33.
Born Bingley, Enlisted Bradford, Resided Bingley.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Serjeant Maurice William Palmer South. 33704. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 29125 Northumberland Fusiliers. Adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. South, of 2, Queen Victoria St., Bingley, Yorks. Killed 1 January 1918. Aged 26.
Born Blackpool, Enlisted Selby, Resided Bingley.
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
