The Burnopfield War Memorial is granite obelisk on a tapering pedestal. The Dedication on the War Memorial at Burnopfield (County Durham) reads;-
The names commemorated on the memorial are inscribed in gold lettering. 133
names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War,
and 26 names for the Second World War. The names are arranged by regiment
/ force served in, and are shown alphabetically. As with many other War Memorials,
there is some confusion as regards service in the Yorkshire Regiment / other
Yorkshire Regiments. Thus, of the 6 names shown as serving in the Yorkshire
Regiment, 1 (J W Green) was in the West Yorkshire Regiment.
Another name, - J McClusky, served in the Yorkshire Regiment but was discharged
in December 1917, and awarded a Silver War Badge. There appears to be no record
of his death.
Thus, of the 6 names commemorated as serving with the Yorkshire Regiment, only 4 are known to have been in the Yorkshire Regiment or to have lost their lives whilst in service.
